Operating System

What is Operating System (OS)?

OS is a program/software that run your computer. An example of OS are Microsoft Windows (95, 98, ME, XP, Vista), Linux (Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Fedora, etc), Apple Macintosh and Solaris.

Introduction

Most user are familiar with Windows OS but some with Linux. To use Windows, all knows that you must get a genuine license because it is a shareware. If you do not want to waste your money just for doing word processing, Linux is the best OS. Why? Of course, Linux is free to use, you can download it via internet with no charge at all.

Linux OS

For a user who just need to use computer only for typing purposes, calculation or games, Linux is more suitable for them. It has Open Office as its word processing (alike Microsoft Office). User can download free Linux OS and distribute it legally. Below are few of Linux distribution:
If you do not want to install Linux in your computer and want to have a 'test drive' with Linux OS, download its LiveCD/DVD or LiveDistro. Set your computer boot priority (1st - your CD/DVD drive) and you can run Linux without install it in your hard drive.

  • Secure to virus attack (most virus are build to attack Windows OS).
  • Small amount of free space needed for installation.
  • Can have more than one network card (NIC) for internet optimization.
  • Stable.
Linux Build-in Softwares

Usually, softwares that embedded with Linux are:
  •  Use OpenOffice.org : Open Office
  • Firefox 2 : Mozilla Firefox (internet browser)
  • Gaim (instant messenger)
  • GIMP (photo editor/image manipulation)
  • Few of games
  • Gparted (hard disk partition manager)
  • Multimedia (for playing music and video)
